Zoie scanned the restaurant’s store hours on the door, then pressed her forehead to the window to peer inside. “Doesn’t look like he opens for another twenty minutes.”

“Perfect,” I said. “He’ll have no excuse not to see us.”

“Think he’ll have something salty on the menu?” Needles mused as he settled on my shoulder.

I rolled my eyes. “You just had a caramel-dipped pretzel rod. Dial it back.”

Zoie tugged on the door, and when it didn’t open, she knocked three times.

“Feel free to jump in with your own questions,” I said. “Now that you’ve gotten a feel for how I normally ask questions at the preliminary interview. If you want to know something, just jump in.”

Zoie nodded. “Okay. It might help me be more assertive.”

When no one answered the door, Zoie knocked again.

“We’re not open,” a server called through the window.

“We’re here in an official capacity,” Zoie said. “We need to speak to Oliver Wolfstein.”

Frowning, the fairy looked over her shoulder before unlocking the door. “Um, okay. I guess I can let you in.” She motioned us inside. “Let me go get Mr. Wolfstein. He’s in his office.”

“Pretty fancy place,” I said when the fairy exited the dining room. “Have you eaten here?”

“Nope. Out of my price range.” Zoie grinned. “Brick, Izzy, Ty, and I usually eat at the Enchanted Island Café.”

The interior walls were painted a warm, creamy beige with stone sconces hanging on the walls. The overhead lighting was subdued and not overbearing—casting an intimate glow around the room. Combined with the numerous windows letting in natural light, it was a perfect balance.

“I like the table and chairs,” Zoie said. “Gives it that expensive look with the padded seats. Plus, with the tables being spaced apart like they are, it doesn’t make you feel like you’re sitting on top of other customers.”

Oliver Wolfstein strode into the dining area. His pinched lips and furrowed brows indicated he was upset about being disturbed. He was dressed in black slacks, a sky-blue button-down shirt with the cuffs rolled up on his forearms, and the tie around his neck was loosely knotted.

“I’m Oliver Wolfstein. What can I do for you?”

“I’m Agent Shayla Loci-Stone, and these are my partners, Needles and Zoie Stone. We’re here to ask you questions regarding the death of Corbin Sageton.”

Zoie pulled out her notepad, pen hovering in the air.

“I already heard,” he said. “His daughter, Amethyst, stopped by earlier to let me know.”

“Why would she do that?” I asked. “Do you two know each other?”

The werewolf shifter crossed his arms over his massive chest and scowled. “I’m pretty sure you know we do. At one point, Amethyst and I were engaged to be married.”

“But you aren’t anymore?” I mused.

“No, we are no longer engaged.”

“And why is that?” Zoie asked.

“Good question,” Needles encouraged.

“For several reasons,” he said.

“Give me one reason,” Zoie demanded.

“You’re getting a high-five when we get to the Bronco, Young Zoie.”

I bit back a smile.

“Well,” Oliver said, “I guess the most important reason was because of her father.”

“Corbin?” I mused.
